Winning in your basketball career is earning the
most money possible based on your ability as a player. The
goal is to convince teams that they want you, and that you are
valuable. The obstacle is that there are thousands of other
players competing for every spot.
The teams have to believe that you are the
player they need, even though they could have someone else, and
even if that someone else would play for less money. The
key to success is separating yourself, making yourself stand
out. You do this on the court by trying to be stronger,
faster more determined and more skillful than all the other
players that you face.
The better you are, the more you
can separate yourself from the pack, but what you do on the
court is only half of the puzzle.
I realized this my senior year at college, and
so I decided to make a highlight reel of myself, then to put the
highlights online. It didn't make me a better player, and
I didn't get a job based on the highlights, but what it did do
was separate me a little bit from all the other hundreds of
players like me.
This team in France
saw my highlights, and it was enough to grab their interest.
The coach asked to see a full game tape, which my agent sent,
then he came to see me at a try-out. I ended up signing
the best contract out of the the five guys who graduated with me
from Davidson, not because I am the best player, but because I
managed to separate myself that little bit. Just enough to
catch this team's attention.
Most of the
responsibility for selling you to teams rests with your agent.
He is the one that will make copies of your tape and send it to
teams. I was never comfortable allowing someone else
to have complete control over my career. I wanted to make
sure that the agent would do everything he could. Having my
highlights online made it easier for him to sell me.
I also worried
about my agent taking the time to copy my tape so I took
responsibility for that too, by making DVDs and sending him 15
copies.

This way he had no reason not to work as fast as
possible, and I was not worried that he would pass up possible
teams because he was tired of copying my tape. I felt good
about doing as much as possible to take my destiny into my own
hands.
I made this
website, as a way to make some money in my spare time, and as a
way to give other players the chance to promote themselves the
same way that I did.
Playerexposure.com
is basically a tool to help your agent (or yourself) sell you to as many
teams as possible, as fast as possible. Instead of having to make hard copies of
your game tape, he can send an email to 100 teams at once, and let
them all see your highlights. The cost of being on the site
is $60,
for which your profile will stay on the site for at least 2 years.
